Panhellenic Council & Officers
Panhellenic Council is the governing body of women’s fraternities, also known as sororities, at Michigan State University. Currently there are thirteen Panhellenic organizations on campus. Composed of nine officers, the Panhellenic Council is elected by their peers to represent the Greek Community to the university's administration, City of East Lansing, and students of Michigan State. It is Panhellenic Council’s job, along with the Interfraternity Council, to maintain the overall welfare of the Greek Community.
Throughout the calendar year Panhellenic Council organizes and supervises recruitment events to ensure the growth of each organization’s membership. The council also promotes scholastic achievement by monitoring the academic performance of sorority women, offering scholarships, and continuing the Greek honor society, Gamma Sigma Alpha. In order to further membership education, Panhellenic Council brings presentations to campus addressing such issues as sexual assault, diversity, body image, and recruitment skills. As sororities are also social organizations, the council seeks to uphold a safe environment in which members can experience the benefits of social networking. Panhellenic Council encourages philanthropic commitment as an entire Greek Community and also within individual organizations. At an all-Greek level, the community participates in Safe Halloween and Greek Week, both of which the planning is supervised by Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council.
Involvement on Panhellenic Council presents a great responsibility and a unique leadership opportunity to its officers. While officers are challenged to disaffiliate from their individual organizations in public, they are also expected to remain in good standing with that organization. It is a privilege to serve as a leader on Panhellenic Council and individual organizations are proud to say a member of their house is a Panhellenic officer.
