One of the most gratifying feelings you can receive as a member of a sorority is the pride that comes from helping others. As a result, our Greek community goes beyond sisterhood and social involvement and reaches further than Michigan State's campus, lending a helping hand to our surrounding communities and several national charitable organizations. This experience is one that most other students have to work much harder to find during their time at MSU.
Individual chapters work hard every year to help raise money and awareness for their own local and national philanthropies. These women are able to make a serious impact on many different organizations including the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the American Cancer Society, the Ronald McDonald House, Special Olympics, and many more. These charitable efforts frequently raise hundreds and even thousands of dollars and many of the women in our community have first hand experiences with the individuals that benefit from our efforts.
In addition to our individual and organizational efforts, each year we come together as a Greek community for philanthropy events that culminate during Greek Week. The sororities and fraternities join together to form teams and compete in various events to raise money for many charitable causes, typically raising more than $100,000. During Greek Wreek 2006, the Greek communities raised more than $150,000 just during Relay for Life, an event that benefits the American Cancer Society.
Being able to make such a sizeable impact is something that we pride ourselves on. Giving back to the community and to such important organizations not only provides immediate assistance for people in need, but also helps our members develop a personal investment in philanthropy that extends beyond their college years.
